Which sleep sound is best?
There's no single best sound. It depends on what you find soothing.
- Steady and neutral: white noise, pink noise or a bedroom fan are good at masking traffic, voices and snoring.
- Deep and warm: brown noise has a low rumble many people find less harsh than white noise.
- Natural: soft rain, rain on a tent, ocean waves and a thunderstorm feel cosy and familiar.
Tips for sleeping with sound
Keep the volume low, just loud enough to soften other noises. Use the sleep timer so the sound fades after you've fallen asleep, and try the same sound each night so it becomes part of your wind-down routine.
Questions people ask
Can I mix sounds together?
Yes. Turn on as many as you like and set each one's volume, for example soft rain with a crackling fire.
Will the sound play all night?
Only if you want it to. Set a 15 to 60 minute sleep timer and the sound fades out gently at the end.
Is it safe to sleep with white noise?
For most adults, quiet background sound is fine. Keep the volume low and use a timer. For babies, follow NHS safer sleep advice and keep any sound source well away from the cot.
