Sleep Staircase
Imagine walking slowly down a soft staircase, one step for every out-breath, towards sleep.
Start Sleep Staircase (20 min)
Follow the circle: it grows as you breathe in and softens as you breathe out.
The 4-2-8 pattern, step by step
- Breathe in for 4 seconds.
- Hold softly for 2 seconds.
- Step down as you breathe out for 8 seconds.
That is one round, lasting 14 seconds, or about 4.3 breaths a minute. Repeat it gently for around 20 minutes. If any count feels too long, shorten it: the breath should always feel comfortable.
Gentle reminders during the session

- With each step you feel heavier and calmer.
- Count the steps if you like, from twenty downwards.
- The air grows softer as you go down.
- At the bottom is a quiet, comfortable room.
- A soft bed is waiting there for you.
- Keep stepping down, slowly.
- Let sleep come when it is ready.
