4-7-8 breathing

4-7-8 breathing is a slow wind-down pattern: breathe in for a count of four, hold for seven, then breathe out slowly for eight. The long out-breath makes it a favourite at bedtime.

Start 4 · 7 · 8 Wind-Down (5 min)

Follow the circle: it grows as you breathe in and softens as you breathe out.

The 4-7-8 pattern, step by step

  1. Breathe in for 4 seconds.
  2. Hold for 7 seconds.
  3. Breathe out for 8 seconds.

That is one round, lasting 19 seconds, or about 3.2 breaths a minute. Repeat it gently for around 5 minutes. If any count feels too long, shorten it: the breath should always feel comfortable.

How to do 4-7-8 breathing

Sit up or lie down comfortably. Breathe in quietly through your nose for four, hold gently for seven, then breathe out through your mouth for eight, as if slowly blowing out a candle. That's one round. Start with four rounds and build up if it feels good.

Tips

  • The ratio matters more than the speed. If seven is too long to hold, count faster or shorten all three numbers.
  • Skip the hold completely if it makes you uncomfortable. A slow in-breath and a longer out-breath still help.
  • Try it in bed with the lights off, as part of the same routine each night.

Questions people ask

Does 4-7-8 breathing help you fall asleep?

Many people use it at bedtime because the long, slow out-breath feels settling. It isn't guaranteed to send you to sleep, but it's a gentle way to wind down.

Why do I feel dizzy doing 4-7-8?

Long holds and deep breaths can make some people light-headed at first. Breathe more gently, shorten the counts, and stop if you feel unwell.
