Triangle breathing (4-4-4)

Triangle breathing has three equal sides: breathe in for four, hold for four, breathe out for four. It's a little simpler than box breathing and just as easy to remember.

Start Triangle Breath (2 min)

Follow the circle: it grows as you breathe in and softens as you breathe out.

The 4-4-4 pattern, step by step

  1. Breathe in for 4 seconds.
  2. Hold for 4 seconds.
  3. Breathe out for 4 seconds.

That is one round, lasting 12 seconds, or about 5 breaths a minute. Repeat it gently for around 2 minutes. If any count feels too long, shorten it: the breath should always feel comfortable.

How to do it

Imagine tracing a triangle. Breathe in as you go up one side, hold across the top, and breathe out as you come down the other. Keep every breath soft and even.

When to use it

Triangle breathing suits restless, scattered moments when you need something simple to focus on. If the hold feels uncomfortable, make it shorter or leave it out.
