Breathing exercise 路 4-2-6 路 5 min

Hand on heart breathing

Rest a hand on your chest, breathe in kindness and breathe out the harsh inner voice. This gentle exercise pairs slow breathing with soothing touch.

Start Hand on Heart (5 min)

Follow the circle: it grows as you breathe in and softens as you breathe out.

The 4-2-6 pattern, step by step

  1. Breathe in kindness for 4 seconds.
  2. Hold it softly for 2 seconds.
  3. Breathe out judgement for 6 seconds.

That is one round, lasting 12 seconds, or about 5 breaths a minute. Repeat it gently for around 5 minutes. If any count feels too long, shorten it: the breath should always feel comfortable.

How to do it

Place one or both hands over your heart, or anywhere that feels comforting. Breathe in slowly and imagine breathing in warmth and kindness. Pause softly. Then breathe out for longer, letting go of judgement and self-criticism.

Why touch helps

A hand on the chest is a simple soothing gesture used in many self-compassion practices. Feeling the warmth and gentle pressure of your own hand can help you feel steadier and less alone in a hard moment.
