🌟 Ultimate Character Creation Guide (SFW Edition)

A friendly, practical, and slightly goofy guide to building amazing characters for storytelling, games, and AI fun!

🎨 Why This Guide Exists

Creating characters with AI tools can feel like trying to teach a hyperactive golden retriever to do algebra.
Sometimes the AI absolutely nails your idea… and other times it gives you a three-headed alien wearing Crocs and a tutu.

This guide will help you tame the chaos by showing you how to write better prompts, build memorable characters, and keep things consistent and fun.

🖌 Image Prompting Basics

Think of image prompting like writing grocery store sticky notes for the AI.
You’re not writing a novel — you’re giving clear, direct tags that say,

“Here’s exactly what I want. Nothing extra, please.”

❌ Bad Prompt:

“I want a tall, athletic person with sparkling green eyes, messy brown hair, and a warm personality who sometimes wears a hoodie.”

The AI will get confused. You might get someone short, three hoodies floating in space, or two entire extra characters.

✅ Good Prompt:

(tall_athletic_body), (sparkling_green_eyes), (messy_brown_hair), (hoodie)

Pro Tips:

  • Use underscores _ to keep multi-word traits together: messy_brown_hair
  • Parentheses ( )strengthen a trait, like bolding text.
    • Example: (glowing_blue_eyes:1.2) → The higher the number, the more attention the AI gives it.
    • Stay below 1.5 for a natural look. Over-weighting = weird results like melting faces or random background chaos.
  • Avoid natural language like “sometimes” or “usually.” AI can’t handle that kind of nuance — keep it simple and direct.

🌍 Choosing a Style

Most platforms give you a choice of different base models.
Here’s a quick cheat sheet:

Model TypeBest ForFun Tip
RealisticHumans, lifelike portraitsGreat for modern stories or grounded worlds.
Anime / StylizedFantasy, sci-fi, cartoon charactersOver-the-top expressions and poses!
ExperimentalWild, dramatic, creative experimentsExpect chaos, embrace it.

🧬 Building the Character: Step-by-Step

1. Start with a Core Concept

Every great character starts with a core idea.
Ask yourself: Who are they?

  • A heroic knight with a sweet tooth?
  • A shy inventor with rainbow-colored goggles?
  • A mischievous forest sprite who hates mornings?

Write down a one-sentence description before you touch the prompt box.

2. Define Key Physical Traits

These are the must-haves that make your character recognizable every time.

TraitExample Tags
Body Type(athletic_body), (curvy_body), (tall_slim_build)
Hair(long_wavy_hair), (braided_ponytail), (pink_hair_highlights)
Eyes(emerald_green_eyes), (golden_hazel_eyes)
Clothing(hoodie), (sci-fi_armor), (flowing_cape)

3. Add Personality Through Visuals

Want them to look like their personality shines through?
Use subtle tags:

  • Cheerful: (bright_smile), (sparkling_eyes)
  • Mysterious: (hood_shadowed_face), (piercing_gaze)
  • Adventurous: (weathered_clothing), (travel_satchel)

4. Create a Negative Prompt List

Negative prompts are like telling the AI,

“No, bad AI! Don’t you dare put that in my image!”

Example:

(no_extra_people), (no_text), (no_blurry_faces), (no_mutations)

This helps keep your images clean and consistent.

5. Reinforce Consistency

If you want persistent traits (like a permanent scar or magical glow),
repeat them in every relevant prompt box:

  • Core description
  • Physical details
  • Background/environment (if supported)

Example for chrome skin:

(mirrorlike_silver_skin), (glowing_reflections)

And in negative prompts:

(no_normal_skin_tones)

🧠 Creating Personality & Story Depth

A visually cool character is great, but personality brings them to life!
Here’s a structure for writing engaging personalities:

  1. Core Traits
    • Optimistic or cynical? Bold or cautious?
    • Example: “Brave but impulsive, with a soft spot for underdogs.”
  2. Motivations & Goals
    • What drives them forward?
    • Example: “Wants to discover ancient tech to save their hometown.”
  3. Flaws & Growth Opportunities
    • Give them room to grow!
    • Example: “Quick temper often gets them into trouble.”
  4. Backstory Seeds
    • Just enough to explain who they are, but leave room for role-play.
    • Example: “Raised by a traveling circus troupe.”

🧪 Prompt Testing & Troubleshooting

Sometimes your perfect idea turns into a chaos gremlin.
Here’s how to fix it:

ProblemLikely CauseFix
Extra characters keep appearingDuplicate tags like (girl) and (asian_girl)Add (solo), simplify prompt
Weird colors/texturesOverweighting traits too highLower weights to 1.1–1.3
Missing key featuresNot enough emphasis on core traitStrengthen with (feature:1.2)
AI keeps going too weirdToo many conflicting promptsStrip it back and rebuild step-by-step

🌱 Final Steps to Bring Your Character to Life

Once your character looks right:

  1. Save their core prompt set somewhere safe.
  2. Create a public description that hooks others:
    • “A fearless rogue who steals from dragons — and occasionally returns the gold just to mess with them.”
  3. Add a fun, SFW greeting or intro to set the scene:
    • “Hey there, traveler! You look like you’ve seen a few battles yourself. Care to share stories over a cup of tea?”

🎭 Advanced Fun: Style & Effects

Want to mix things up?

  • (pixel_art_style) → Retro game vibe
  • (watercolor_painting_style) → Soft, artistic look
  • (glitch_art_effect) → Cyberpunk chaos
  • (comic_panel_layout) → Comic-book feel

These tags change how your character appears without changing their identity.

🌟 Wrap-Up: The Golden Rules

Have fun with it. The best characters come from experimenting.

Be clear, be simple. AI loves clarity.

Iterate slowly. Add one change at a time.

Negative prompts are your best friend.

Save your perfect setups. Future you will thank you!
